Veronica to get UNESCO Champion for Sport award PDF Print E-mail

 Jamaica’s darling of Track and Field, Veronica Campbell-Brown, will be conferred as a UNESCO Champion for Sport today (Tuesday) at the 35th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris.

The Double Olympic Champion at 200 metres, who was nominated by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP, will take on the mission of Gender Equality in Sports.  Minister Grange will attend the ceremony. 

The Minister, who has responsibility for Gender Affairs, pointed out that Veronica’s mission is a significant step for global gender issues. 

Minister Grange said:

“Jamaica’s dominance in sports has positioned the nation to take on important world issues and to influence progress in these areas as well.  

“Gender equality is a very important issue across the world and to have Veronica lead the charge in sports from the UNESCO platform is another outstanding achievement for Jamaican women.” 

    • Minister Grange is attending the 35th session of the General Conference of UNESCO.  She is the Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO.   
  • While in Paris Minister Grange will be involved in debates on policy and the discussions that will determine budget allocations and project approvals; and will hold bilateral talks with some member countries. 

    Veronica Campbell-Brown has won gold at the World Youth Championships, World Junior Championships and at the World Championships at the senior level.  She is Jamaica’s most successful female Olympian with three gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal over three games.
